MUS Owls Learn the Science of Staying Dry

Parasol Helps Owls Get Out of the Rain

Problem:

It’s hard to concentrate on science when you’re soaking wet. On rainy days, students at Memphis University School (MUS) were conducting experiments involving how to stay dry and still get to their classes in the McCaughan Science Center. Rain was also a problem for faculty and students using the Fisher Fine Arts Wing.

The MUS Buildings and Grounds Committee decided it was time for a solution. Rankin Fowlkes, Director of Business Operations for MUS, contacted Michael Folk at Parasol Awnings. Michael’s son, now a sophomore at UNC-Chapel Hill, went to MUS, and Michael’s a strong supporter of the school.

“Michael came out and looked at the areas in question,” said Rankin. “He recommended a standing seam canopy to link the McCaughan Science Center to the Campus Center and four fabric awnings for the Fisher Fine Arts Wing. He was able to take our primitive sketch and make renderings that showed us how the canopy and awnings would look at each location. It was great that we could see exactly what it would look like in advance. I emailed the visuals to the committee members, and they only had minor changes.”

The Parasol team worked to build the canopies and awnings at its manufacturing facility on Hickory Hill Road. By completing most of the projects prior to installation, the awnings and canopy could be installed in one day when there were no students around.

“Everything went great. They delivered and installed everything in the timeframe we needed,” said Rankin. “Everything looked so good that we added fabric panels with our logo to Stokes Stadium, our on campus sports complex. These panels tie the stadium in visually with the Fisher Fine Arts Wing. We get a lot of positive comments from parents, faculty and board members.”

Now MUS students can get around campus in the rain and still stay dry. That makes Memphis’s rainiest months a little less gloomy, and there are fewer bad-hair days for students and faculty.

Michael takes pride in all his projects, yet this one has special significance because he’s applied his company’s talents to improve the school that gave his son so many happy years.
